Men need other men

Scripture: Colossians 4:7-18

In the closing verses of Colossians, Paul lists several vital men in his life. These names might seem like mere historical footnotes, but they represent real men who walked in faith, served Christ, and impacted the early church. Paul shows his gratitude for these men by making sure they get the recognition they deserve.

Tychicus: Mr. Reliable

Paul describes Tychicus as a "beloved brother, faithful minister, and fellow servant in the Lord" (Col. 4:7-8). He was entrusted with carrying Paul’s letters and encouraging the churches. Are we dependable in the work God has given us? Do we strive to be faithful in both great and small responsibilities? Do you have any beloved brothers? Christian brothers in arms that you can count on?

Onesimus: The Transformed

Once a runaway slave, Onesimus encountered Christ and became a “faithful and beloved brother” (Col. 4:9). We read about his conversion story in the tiny book of Philemon. He was sitting in prison when the man beside him told him about Jesus. It happened that his cellmate was the Apostle Paul. Onesimus’ story reminds us that no life is beyond God’s redemption. Have you allowed Christ to transform your life? Are you walking in the new identity He has given you?

Aristarchus: The Loyal Companion

Aristarchus shared in Paul’s sufferings, even being imprisoned with him (Col. 4:10). True friendship in Christ means standing firm with one another in trials. Are we willing to walk through hardships with our brothers in faith?

Mark: The Restored Friend

Mark had once abandoned Paul’s mission (Acts 13:13), leading to a sharp disagreement between Paul and Barnabas (Acts 15:37-39). Yet, by the time of Colossians, Mark was restored and useful for ministry. God is a God of second chances. Have you failed before? Don’t let failure define you—seek restoration and continue serving Christ. Paul and Mark’s relationship testifies to a broken friendship restored. When difficulties arrive, we shouldn’t be so quick to give up on our friends, but we should work on reconciliation.

Justus: The Encourager

Though little is known about Justus, Paul notes that he was one of the few Jewish believers who remained with him (Col. 4:11). Sometimes, our role is simply to stand by others and provide encouragement. Are you an encourager to the other men in our church? Your very presence here this morning is an encouragement. Especially to me and the Elders. And more importantly, to the men sitting around you.

Epaphras: The Prayer Warrior

Epaphras labored in prayer for the Colossians (Col. 4:12-13). He was a member of the church there in Colossi. He reminds us that we are to pray for one another. Are we committed to praying for our brothers in Christ? You know the challenges you face as a man. These men here face the same challenges. You can pray for them because you already know what they need, the same as you.

Luke: The Faithful Friend

Luke, the beloved physician and author of Luke and Acts, remained a steadfast companion of Paul (Col. 4:14; 2 Tim. 4:11). His example challenges us to be consistent and faithful in our friendships and service. Do we stand by our fellow believers even when things get difficult?

Demas: The Tragic Warning

At this point, Demas was serving alongside Paul, but later, he abandoned the ministry because he loved the world (2 Tim. 4:10). His life is a sobering reminder that our hearts must stay fixed on Christ. Are we guarding our hearts against distractions that pull us away from God?

Archippus: The Called Leader

Paul exhorts Archippus to “fulfill the ministry” he received in the Lord (Col. 4:17). Each of us has a calling from God. Are we actively pursuing and fulfilling it? Ask yourself, who am I ministering to? In your family, in your church, in your community.

Prayer:

Lord, thank You for these examples of faithfulness and service. Help me to be a man who is reliable like Tychicus, transformed like Onesimus, loyal like Aristarchus, and prayerful like Epaphras. Keep my heart fixed on You so I do not fall away like Demas. Strengthen me to fulfill the calling You have given me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Brothers, let’s take inspiration from these men and commit to being faithful brothers in Christ.
